Business Development Isn’t For Cowards

Being a Prospecting trainer and coach I get all kinds of excuses why Prospecting in the field isn’t practical. You probably know most of them.

So what is an alternative? Simple, but it isn’t for cowards.

The most under utilized Marketing/Prospecting tool around is public speaking.

You are an expert on some aspect of your product or service. Find audiences that use your type of product or service and tell them something that will help them use it more efficiently.

Association chapters, Chambers of Commerce all sorts of organizations have meetings that need speakers.

All you need to do is put together a 20 minute speech on one aspect of your produt or service that will benefit the audience. Now this can’t be a sales presentation. It has to be of benefit to the audience regardless of their future relationship to you or your company.

The benefits are two fold. First, you will establish yourself as an expert on this particular aspect of your product or service, and you will get free stuff.

Once you have hit the circuit in your territory, you will find that you become the “go to person” for information.

A couple of things to remember. Always bring a lot of business cards. Also, be sure to invite people to contact you anytime with questions that you will be glad to answer without any obligation.

If someone comes up after your talk with specific needs at that moment, you may want to ask for their card and find a time to meet with them. You don’t want to pre-empt others from talking to you by devoting all your time to one person.

Now, there are two things that can make this a difficult process.

Preparing the speech and getting the dates.

First, preparing the speech. You have to be a good speaker. I teach public speaking so I know that most people can be good speakers. It requires time, preparation, and rehearsal. If you aren’t willing to do all three, you won’t get far.

Second, you will have to Prospect for opportunities. That is contact organizations to get on their schedule. This isn’t too difficult but requires time some selling.

You know these things, so just do them. It is actually fun once you get the ball rolling. You get to meet and talk to a lot of friendly people; you get a lot of free stuff like pens, clocks, note pads and just about always a meal.

So if you don’t like straight out field Prospecting, give public speaking a try. I know it is Marketing not Prospecting, but it is a good step.

If you have any questions about this, send me an e-mail and I will be glad to help – no obligation.

Planning an Organized Marketing Strategy for Online Business Development

The key to creating an organized online marketing strategy is planning. If your only business isn’t developed using a streamlined approach to planning, you’ll soon find yourself overloaded with stuff you didn’t get done and don’t have time to do. Worse, you’ll be in that predicament with not enough profit to hire it done.

By using these simple, step-by-step procedures to plan your business online, you’ll grasp a handle on your business quickly with plenty of time to enjoy your business profits.

1. Schedule time to plan every week and follow your plan. You may choose to use an online calendar, a notebook, or a 30 day file, the method you choose isn’t as important as the process of using it.

  • Check it frequently.
  • Add everything to the calendar.
  • Include time for yourself in your schedule.
  • Make all appointments stand out, so you don’t forget them.
  • Make time for admin and writing duties, they are important too.

2. Generate a ToDo List and keep it handy. This MUST be on paper. The sense of completion you will feel as you check off each item and cross them off your list is worth the extra paper activity each day. Don’t pass up this opportunity to recognize your accomplishments.

NOTE: Each morning, before you get started, cross three things off your list that you know you’re not going to get done that day. THIS IS IMPORTANT.

3. Spiral notebook. I’m going to say it again, because this is important. SPIRAL NOTEBOOK. Get a thick one with some folders and keep some paperclips attached. Write absolutely everything in your spiral notebook, because it’s your record for the time you’ve got it. Notes, ideas, suggestions, names, addresses, contact information, goals, projects, discussions, topics for writing, information you MUST keep, and anything else you happen to want to jot down. Write it in your spiral notebook. This is your book, dated from beginning to end. Write on front and back pages, nobody will read it but you, and you want all the details.

There are so many pieces to planning your business online, you’re going to want everything written down, organized and completely strategized. I always recommend new business owners find a business coach or consultant to help organize a business start up, because without one, it’s like running blind into a mine field. The results of a well planned business from the beginning are immediate profits.

Nobody can guarantee those immediate profits on the front, but you’re far more likely to have them, if your business is well planned.

Internet Marketing Opportunities in Developing Countries

Before we Start, Chuck the Term: “Third World”
At the outset, and without wanting to offend, please allow me to caution about the use of the term “third world”. “Third world” and “third world countries” are outdated and politically insensitive terms, having the connotation of inferiority, backwardness, sub-standard, low etc., and also denotes inferiority of the people of those countries. Something like: “Third grade people live in third world countries”. It is terminology associated with and rooted in imperialism, colonialism and the oppressive regimes of the “superior conquerors”

Perceptions of and Approaches to Developing Countries are Crucial for Marketing Success in those Countries
Notwithstanding the above and without venturing into the very role of imperialism and colonization in the creation of these discrepancies, the reality of wealthier and poorer nations cannot be negated. Hence, the more acceptable and less patronizing terms for “third world” would be “developing countries”, or better still, “emerging market economies”. I think a shift in how people in emerging market countries are referred to and perceived would probably be a prerequisite for successful business and marketing ventures in such countries. It is inevitable that the perceptions and attitudes about the people targeted for marketing purposes will infiltrate the marketing approach and strategies.

Developing countries: Fertile Ground for Home Business Opportunities
Human beings have vastly more in common than the differentials of income, status and standard of living. As much as poorer people may not have the material means to be perceived as potential customers or clients, as much should their aspirations, their drive and hence their potential to achieve and succeed never be underestimated. With this in mind I have no doubt that the market for products with skills development and income generating components integral to them, is absolutely massive and gravely neglected in developing countries! Just consider this against the background of the sky high levels of unemployment in developing countries. In the vast majority of cases unemployment = poverty. However, unemployment does not equal a lack of ability. More often than not is it merely about the absence of opportunity which is sadly overwhelmingly more prevalent in emerging market economies. Furthermore, there are a disproportionately higher number of well-qualified and computer literate unemployed people in developing countries compared to the number in developed countries. Hence, developing countries offer very fertile ground and untapped opportunities for quality home based work and business opportunities.

Internet Affiliate Marketing is Ideal for Developing Countries
This is especially true for internet marketing type positions that require a nominal financial investment to get started, and more so for affiliate marketing positions where the products have been tested and tried and where comprehensive guidelines for an effective internet marketing campaign are provided together with the tools, including product websites, to greatly enhance the chances of marketing success.

In considering the developing world for marketing purposes it must also be borne in mind that all developing countries have a strong developed component. In fact, there is a middle-class boom taking place in most of the developing world with the economic growth rate of many developing countries by far surpassing that of developed countries. This is the reason why these developing countries are also referred to as emerging market economies. It tells us a tremendous lot about the potential of these countries for new business opportunities.
